Position SummaryThe Director of Research Finance supports basic and translational research, serving as a principal advisor to the Senior Director of Research Administration on matters related to research finance.In addition to accounting, budgeting, and development of management reports, primary responsibilities include creation and implementation of policies, procedures, and internal controls. S/he works closely with research and finance leadership to ensure achievement of financial performance goals in alignment with City of Hope’s research goals. S/he will be a financial professional with significant managerial experience, preferably in an academic or non-profit space. S/he will possess a bachelor’s degree, with an MBA or CPA preferred.Key Responsibilities include:BudgetLead and coordinate the development of the annual operating, capital, and grant budgets for research, including multi-year financial projections that are aligned with and support the strategic priorities of the research enterprise.Prepare special analyses and reports that support research budget and financial priorities.Proactively monitor research departments and financial transactions to assure budget and policy compliance; identify and apply corrective actions as necessary.Identify and/or reallocate resources for strategic research projects and priorities.Financial Management/GeneralWork with other departments to ensure compliance with sponsor regulations, streamline workflows, and improve processes to improve efficiencies while maintaining an atmosphere that fosters the research mission of the organization.Manage other critical day-to-day compliance and operational processes for the research enterprise, including: expense review/approval, capital expenditures, new project setups, etc.Interact, establish cooperative working relationships, and communicate effectively with co-workers and personnel in other departments, particularly Research Operations units, Corporate Accounting, Philanthropy, and Corporate Finance.Prepare routine and ad hoc special financial analyses and reporting to support COH’s research enterprise. Lead development of financial summaries for monthly close.Assist with ongoing review of internal processes to streamline or create new more efficient processes; assist in executing process changes and assist with overseeing to completion.Actively participate in enterprise-wide system improvement initiatives.Participate in high level meetings to meet the strategic goals of research.Represent the organization in various civic, community and professional organizations at the local, state, and national level as required. Establish working relationships with appropriate organizations and individuals.Maintain professional growth and development and keeps abreast of latest trends in area of expertise.ManagementProvide guidance and leadership to subordinates and to departmental business personnel to increase the competencies of the organization and to ensure compliance with regulations and internal policiesProvide leadership in the recruitment, selection, evaluation and development of key staff in the unit.Cost AnalysisWork with Corporate Finance to report on revenue and expenditure analyses for research.Work with Senior Director of Research Administration to design, develop, and implement management reports that provide concise and accurate financial status assessments at various levels of detail.Direct and participate in the preparation of selected state and federal reports and audits as needed.Responsible for the negotiation of indirect cost rate for the institute.DevelopmentPartner with Philanthropy and Corporate Accounting to establish workflows and appropriate administration and reporting of philanthropic funds including restricted gifts and endowments as these relate to research including the creation and administration of permanent gifts/endowment records, compliance with donor restrictions, institutional policies and federal and state regulations.Oversee disbursement and spending of philanthropic funds for research.Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:Bachelor’s degreeMinimum five to seven years of progressive financial management experience in a large, complex organization.Sound financial background in an academic or non-profit setting.Basic education, experience and skills preferred for consideration:MBA or CPAAdditional Information:To protect the health of patients and staff and to comply with new State of California mandates, City of Hope staff are required to show proof of full vaccination prior to start date.
