What Your Job Will Be Like:The Advanced Metals Processing team is dedicated to tackling ambitious material challenges across our operations and plays a vital role in Sandia’s Advanced Metal Manufacturing, where we focus on developing cutting-edge manufacturing processes. Our team of subject matter experts specializes in the advanced manufacturing and modification of metals, managing a diverse portfolio of R&D projects that push the boundaries of the state-of-the-art while supporting a wide range of customers across Sandia and the Nuclear Security Enterprise.We are excited to announce an opportunity for an energetic R&D Undergraduate Intern to join our Advanced Metals Processing team. We are looking for a forward-thinking and enthusiastic student, preferably a sophomore or junior majoring in materials science or engineering, metallurgical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) field. The ideal candidate should have laboratory experience, a solid understanding of Heat and Mass Transfer, and knowledge of the Mechanical Behavior of Materials. Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software is essential, along with the ability to use design software such as SolidWorks. Familiarity with optics, lasers, LabVIEW, or G-code programming will be advantageous. As an intern, you will assist with process development and qualification of components, working with technologies such as laser powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition (both powder and wire), wire arc, and bound powder extrusion.
